Since 1993, the AÉRIA Organisation association, founded by Jean Giacosa, has been organising the Var Verdon Trail Canyon (VVTC), a sporting event in the largest canyon in Europe. Passionate about nature, Jean wanted to offer a unique challenge by combining adventure and respect for the environment , values at the heart of this event.
Since its creation, the Var Verdon Trail Canyon has evolved, attracting more and more runners each year who come to surpass themselves in an exceptional setting.
The Var Verdon Trail Canyon is renowned for its technical and spectacular route and its exceptional markings… Encouraged to explore nature and reach their limits in complete safety, this trail in the Verdon offers an unforgettable spectacle… This unmissable event is the precursor of the trails in the South East region and one of the oldest trails in France. Today, it is anchored in the sporting and environmental history of the Var department.
The event relies on a team of passionate volunteers, committed partners, professionals from various backgrounds (medical, first aid, ski patrol, and mountaineering), as well as a team of logistics experts. All share a common goal: to promote the heritage of the Verdon Gorges and encourage the eco-tourism development of this unique site.
AÉRIA ORGANISATION continues to keep the legacy of this human adventure alive by combining sport, conservation, and love of the Verdon. It is an invitation to wonder. The Var Verdon Trail Canyon is much more than a race: beyond physical endurance, participants have the opportunity to explore the hidden gems of the South region. As a contemporary writer Jean Giono said “Here it is more than far, it is elsewhere”.
It is not only the beauty of the course that makes this event unique, it is more than a simple race, it is a celebration of nature, an awareness of its splendor and vulnerability. It is therefore imperative to preserve this natural space for generations to come.
It welcomed the biggest names in the discipline during its first editions:
Dawa Sherpa, Lionel Bonnel, Gilles Diehl, Patrick Lothode, Andy Symonds…
Running on the trails of the Verdon is above all a challenge but it is also a way of taking part, regardless of your place at the finish,
in a rich and founding history.
